로스는 육계 중에서 전 세계 시장 점유율이 가장 높은 품종이다. 더 빨리 더 많은 고기를 얻기 위해 개량된 품종으로, 35일 만에 몸무게 2.2kg까지 성장한다. 이 빠른 성장은 닭에게 여러 질병을 일으키는데, 뼈의 성장 속도를 앞지르는 급격한 체중 증가로 인해 다리 기형이나 각종 근골격계 질환에 시달리게 된다. 또한 장기부전, 심장마비 같은 심각한 질환을 앓기도 한다.

On the way to a Ross breeder farm with the owner of Gyeryong Hatchery.
The Ross is the broiler breed with the highest market share worldwide. Selectively bred to produce more meat faster, it reaches up to 2.2kg in just 35 days. This rapid growth causes various health problems in chickens. The excessive weight gain before bones are fully developed leads to leg deformities and various musculoskeletal diseases. It can also result in serious conditions such as organ failure and heart attacks.
계룡 부화장 사장님의 도움으로 로스 종계장을 소개받아, 도태를 앞둔 노계 5마리를 데려올 수 있었다.
로스는 우리나라 닭고기 시장 점유율 1위를 차지하고 있는, 우리가 흔히 치킨으로 소비하는 바로 그 닭이다. 치킨이 되는 '육계'의 부모를 사육하는 곳이 종계장인데, 육계는 평균 2개월이면 식용으로 도축되지만 종계는 약 15개월 정도 사육되다가 도태된다고 한다.
부화장 사장님께서 감사하게도 병아리 운송차로 양계장까지 선뜻 동행해 주셨다. 집단으로 모여 있는 닭들은 전염병에 취약해서 외부인 출입을 엄격하게 관리하기 때문에, 나 혼자서는 농장에 접근할 수 없었기 때문이다.
With the help of the owner of Gyeryong Hatchery, I was introduced to a Ross breeder farm and able to bring home five old hens facing culling.
The Ross is the bestselling chicken breed in Korea—the very chicken we commonly consume as fried chicken. Breeder farms raise the parent stock of broiler chickens. While broilers are typically slaughtered after two months, their parents are raised for about 15 months before being culled.
Thankfully, the hatchery owner willingly accompanied me to the farm in his chick transport vehicle. Because chickens housed together are highly vulnerable to infectious diseases, farms strictly control outside access. I wouldn't have been able to enter the farm on my own.

닭은 부리로 공격할 수도 있고 힘도 세다. 부화장 사장님께서 혼자서 도착지에서 닭들이 든 박스를 옮기고 꺼낼 수 있겠느냐며 걱정을 많이 하셨기 때문에, 작업실로 가는 내내 박스에서 닭들을 어떻게 꺼낼지 온갖 경우의 수를 따져보며 시뮬레이션을 돌리느라 정신이 없었다. 그 와중에 박스 속 수탉이 깩깩 소릴 지르고 박스를 미친 듯 쪼아대며 탈출하려 해서, 혹시 운전 중에 돌연 닭들이 박스에서 튀어나오면 어쩌나 싶어 겁이 나면서도 공포에 떠는 닭들이 안쓰러워 괜히 뒷자리의 박스를 향해 "괜찮아. 거의 다 왔어."하고 연거푸 말했다.
작업실에 도착하자마자 용기를 내어 연 박스.
그렇게 시끄럽던 잭슨이 용수철 인형처럼 박스 위로 긴 목을 쑥 내밀더니, 근엄한 표정으로 과묵하게 주변을 두리번거렸다. 나는 예상보다 훨씬 큰 잭슨의 덩치에 놀라 무의식적으로 뒷걸음질을 치고 있었다.
Chickens can attack with their beaks and are quite strong. The hatchery owner was very concerned about whether I could handle moving the box and taking them out alone at the destination. So during the entire drive to the studio, I frantically ran through simulations, considering every possible scenario for how to get the chickens out of the box. Meanwhile, the rooster inside shrieked and frantically pecked at the box, trying to escape. I feared they might suddenly burst out while I was driving, yet also felt sorry for their terror, so I kept calling out to the box in the back seat, "It's okay. We're almost there."
As soon as I arrived at the studio, I nervously opened the box.
Jackson, who had been so noisy, suddenly stretched his long neck up out of the box like a jack-in-the-box, then surveyed his surroundings with a stern, silent expression. Startled by his size, much larger than I'd expected, I instinctively stepped back.

달리는 차 안에서 한 시간이 넘도록 어디로 가는지도 모른 채 얼마나 무서웠을까. 기진맥진한 상태로 힘겹게 기어 나왔는데, 온몸이 똥으로 범벅이 되어 있었다. 함께 온 다른 암탉 한 마리는 이미 몸이 굳은 채 죽어 있었다. 나는 차마 가까이 다가가 얼굴을 보지 못하고 팔을 뻗어 신문지로 덮었다. 알아보니 가정에서 동물이 죽으면 잘 포장해서 종량제 봉투에 담아 버려야 한다고 했다.
작업실에서 닭들과의 첫 추억은 죽은 암탉을 포장한 것.

Arrival at the studio
They must have been very scared in the car for more than one hour without knowing what was happening.
Their bodies were covered with poop when they crawled out of the box. One of the hens had already dead; leaving behind a stiff body. I couldn't even examine the body, and just covered it with paper. Later, I found out that if an animal dies in the house, you have to wrap it well and put it into a standard plastic garbage bag.
My first memory of the chickens in the studio is wrapping the dead hen with paper.
폴록
작업실에 도착했을 때 목을 축 늘어뜨린 채 눈도 뜨지 못하고 가쁜 숨을 몰아쉬고 있었다. 어떻게 해야 할지 고민하는데, 조금 안정된 잭슨과 체리가 다가와 폴록을 부리로 괴롭히듯 건드리길래 놀라 폴록을 감싸 안았다. 그렇게 큰 닭을 만지는 건 처음이었지만, 아픈 닭을 보니 보살펴야겠다는 마음이 앞서면서 두려움을 자연스럽게 극복했던 것 같다.
오는 길이 너무 더웠던 건가 싶어 실내 온도를 낮추고, 배설물에 젖은 몸도 닦아주고, 입을 벌려 물도 먹이며 몇 시간 동안 간호했지만 폴록은 끝내 숨을 거두고 말았다.
Pollock
When he arrived at the studio, he was breathing heavily without opening his eyes. Iwas wondering what to do, and then, more stabilized Jackson and Cherry came to Pollock, and it looked like bullying. So, I was surprised and held Pollock. It was the first time for me to hold a big rooster, but I overcame the fear because I had to take care of him.
I thought the temperature of the car was hot, so I tried to decrease the temperature of the room. And I cleaned his poop-soaked body andd tried to feed him water. However, Pollock died after a few hours later.
박스에서 나와 몇 시간째 가만히 앉아 안정을 취하고 있는 체리와 잭슨. 서로 의지가 되는지 꼭 붙어있다.
나는 휴식을 방해하지 않으려 일부러 거리를 두고 지켜보기만 했다.
Cherry and Jackson tried to calm down, sitting for hours and seemed to depend on each other.
I just watched them, keeping some distance not to disturb their rest.
작업실 도착 후 3시간 정도 지나자 다리를 펴고 조금씩 일어서기 시작했다.
처음에는 앉은 자세에서 꼼짝도 하지 않고 눈만 껌뻑이고 있었는데, 은은한 조명 아래 물과 먹이를 건네며 안정을 취할 수 있도록 환경을 만들어주니 편안해진 것 같았다. 걸어 다녀 본 적이 없는 건지, 겨우 일어서서 한 발 내딛다가 주저앉기를 반복했다.
Three hours later, they began to stand up a little.
At first, they were just blinking slowly without moving. But after I made some comfortable surroundings with soft lighting and provided some food andd water, they seemed to be relieved.
They had trouble walking at first, it seemed to be their first time ever.
They plopped down on the ground repeatedly.

셋은 오늘 처음 만났지만, 어느새 서로에게 든든한 친구가 되어 낯선 환경에 적응하는 걸 돕고 있다. 철창을 사이에 두지 않고 다른 닭과 살을 맞댄 이 상황이 어색하고 어리둥절하겠지?

They met for the first time today, but quickly became friends as they adjusted to the new environment. It must have been very awkward for them to be with other chickens without steel bars.
The three of them looked sideways at me continuously, sitting side by side.
나나가 몸을 추스르더니 이상한 행동을 하기 시작했다. 작업실 구석에 쌓아놓은 스티로폼 더미 틈새로 몸을 비집고 들어가 끙끙대는 소리를 내는 것이다. 문제가 생긴 것 같아 해결책을 찾으려 했지만, 무엇을 의미하는 행동인지 인터넷을 검색해봐도 알 길이 없었다. 새벽 4시가 넘은 터라 양계장에 문의할 수도 없어서 담요를 덮어주었다가 물을 주었다가, 그것도 아닌 것 같아 조명을 더 어둡게, 밝게 조절해보고, 또 아닌가 싶어 시원하게 해주었지만 이상한 행동은 멈추지 않았다.
Nana composed herself and then began to show strange behavior. She squeezed her body into the gaps between a pile of styrofoam stacked in the corner of the studio and made groaning sounds. Sensing something was wrong, I tried to find a solution, but searching the internet gave me no clue what this behavior meant. It was past 4 a.m., so I couldn't contact the farm. I tried covering her with a blanket, then giving her water, but that didn't seem right either. I adjusted the lighting—darker, then brighter—and tried cooling the room, but the strange behavior didn't stop.

I was so exhausted.
철장 밖에서의 첫날밤.
이것저것 준비하면서 닭들의 상태를 살피느라 새벽 5시가 넘어서야 겨우 잠자리에 들 수 있었다. 작업실의 모든 조명을 껐는데 암탉들이 불안해하며 어수선하게 움직인다.
왜지?
무슨 문제가 생긴 건가 싶어 불을 켰더니 신기하게 안정을 되찾았고, 불을 끄면 또 한바탕 소란이 일었다.
오늘 밤 잠은 다 잤네. 원인을 알아내기 위해 또다시 인터넷 검색을 시작했다. 농장의 산란계 사육 공간은 생산성을 높이기 위해 밤에도 거의 환하게 전등을 켜놓는다고 한다.
밝은 빛에 호르몬이 반응하기 때문이다.
그랬구나. 어두운 게 낯설어 무서웠구나.
침대 주변으로 쳐놓은 펜스를 거두고 닭들을 가까이 데려왔다.
누군가 옆에 있다는 게 안심이 되었는지 그제야 침대 근처에 옹기종기 모여 어둠 속에서 잠을 청했다.
오늘 밤부턴 편하게 푹 자렴.
The first night outside the cage
After preparing many things for the chickens, I went to bed after five o'clock in the morning. Even though all the lights were turned off, the hens were anxious and moved here andd there.
Why? What was the problem?
When I turned on the light, they were stable. But when I turned off the lights, they became nervous.
I coulddn't sleep, so I began to search the internet for the cause. They say that the lights in the breeddding space for spawning eggs are turned on brightly even at night to increase productivity.
It's because hormones react to bright light.
So that was the reason. They were afraid of darkness.
I removedd the fence around the bed and brought the chickens close.
Perhaps they were relieved that someone was next th them, so they began to sleep in the dark.
Please sleep comfortably from tonight.

아침이 되어서도 나나의 이상한 행동이 이어졌고, 갑자기 펼쳐진 개방적인 공간 때문에 불안한 건지도 모른다는 생각에 다른 닭들과 분리해서 아늑한 공간을 따로 만들어줬는데 그것도 아닌 것 같았다. 나나는 스티로폼 더미뿐 아니라 작업실에서 좁은 구석을 발견하면 거기에 몸을 억지로 끼워 넣으려 했다.
그래. 하고 싶은 대로 한번 놔둬 보자.
점심때쯤 나나의 울음소리가 점점 커지더니 급기야 비명처럼 날카로운 소리를 연달아 내기까지 했다. 그러고는 얼마 뒤 바닥에 널브러져 있던 전선 뭉치 위에 올라가 달걀 하나를 낳았다. 나중에야 알았다. 비명 같았던 울음소리가 알을 낳기 전 적당한 둥지를 찾을 때 내는 소리였다는 것을.
Nana's strange behavior continued in the morning. I thought the wide and open space could cause her fear, so I made an isolated and cozy space for her. But it didn't work. When Nana found a narrow corner in the studio, as well as a stack of polystyrene, she tried to force herself into it.
Alright. Let's just let her do what she wants.
Around lunchtime, Nana's cries grew louder and louder, until she was letting out sharp, piercing screams. Then, shortly after, she climbed onto a bundle of electrical cables lying on the floor and laid an egg. I only realized later that those scream-like cries were the sounds she made while searching for a suitable nest before laying.

작업실에 온 지 3일이 지났는데, 아직 공간이 낯선지 활동량이 적고 종일 같은 자리에서 서 있다가 앉기를 반복한다. 넓은 공간을 돌아다녀 본 적이 없어서 그런 건지도 모르겠다.

체리의 발바닥 양쪽은 커다란 딱지로 덮여 있다. 원인을 찾아보니 농장 케이지의 비위생적인 환경에서 균에 감염되는 경우가 많다고 한다.
예전에는 딱지가 생긴 발도 식용으로 유통되었다고 하는데, 요즘에는 식품안전법이 강화되어 감염되지 않은 발만 식용으로 쓸 수 있다고 한다.
Both of the soles of Cherry's feet were covered with large scabs. Chicken's feet are frequently infected with bacteria due to the unsanitary environment in the farm cage.
In the past, the feet with scabs were also distributed for food, but these days, food safety laws have been strengthened, so only the uninfected feet can be used for food.

본격적인 똥 파티가 시작되었다.
일어나서 잘 때까지 30분 간격으로 똥을 치우게 됐는데, 세 마리가 번갈아가며 자주 변을 보는 것도 문제지만 똥을 밟은 발로 바닥 여기저기를 발랄하게 돌아다니거나, 똥 위에 배를 깔고 앉았다가 다른 곳으로 이동해서 배로 똥 도장을 찍고 다니는 걸 쫓아다니며 수습해야 하기 때문이다. 케이지에서 살면서 똥을 피해야 한다는 위생 관념이 실종된 듯하다.
변을 가리는 건 바라지도 않으니 똥 위에 철퍼덕 앉지만 말아줘.
It's a kind of poop party!
I had to clean the poop every 30 minutes until I went to bed. This is because the three take turns defecating, and they move around vigorously on the floor with their stool, sit on the stool, and move to another place to stamp their excrement. While living in the cage, they seem to have lost all notions of hygiene.
Please, I don't expect you to avoid pooping, but just avoid sitting on them!

닭을 데려오기 전에 해외 배송으로 미리 조류용 산책 하네스를 구입해 두었다. L 사이즈를 샀는데도 워낙 뚱뚱이들이라 막상 입혀보니 벨트가 몸통의 절반도 채 감기지 않아 두 배로 늘려야 했다.
하네스가 어색해서 뒤뚱거리는 체리.
야외 산책에서 다치지 않도록 한 마리씩 복도에서 하네스를 착용하고 걷는 훈련을 시작했다.
Before bringing the chickens home, I ordered a bird harness for walks from overseas. Even though I bought size L, they were so plump that when I tried it on them, the belt didn't even wrap around half of their bodies, so I had to alter it to double the size.
Cherry is waddling due to the awkwardness of the harness.
To avoid injury to the chickens walking them outdoors, I began to train them one by one to walk with the harness in the hallway.

닭 사육을 준비하면서 해외 배송으로 넓은 닭장도 주문해 두었는데, 택배가 예상보다 훨씬 늦게 도착하는 바람에 내 생활 공간을 닭들과 온전히 공유하게 됐다. 아니, 오히려 닭들의 공간에 내가 얹혀사는 모양새가 되었다.
한참 지나서야 도착한 닭장은 자유롭게 드나들 수 있도록 열어 두었는데, 케이지에 살던 습관 때문인지 잠자리로, 그리고 가끔은 낮 놀이터로 사용되었다.
In preparation for raising chickens, I had also ordered a large coop from overseas, but the delivery arrived much later than expected, so I ended up fully sharing my living space with the chickens. Or rather, it became more like I was living in their space.
When the coop finally arrived, I left it open for them to come and go freely. Perhaps out of habit from their cage days, they used it as a sleeping spot and occasionally as a daytime playground.

나나는 세 마리 중 서열 3위다. 나는 서열 4위인 듯하다. 체리에게 괴롭힘을 당하면 나한테 쪼르르 달려와서 안아달라고 보챈다. 내 다리나 팔 사이로 얼굴을 쏙 집어넣고 나를 빤히 쳐다보면 어서 안아달라는 뜻이다.
Nana ranks third among the three. I seem to be ranked fourth. When Cherry bullies her, she comes running to me and begs to be held. When she tucks her face between my legs or arms and stares up at me, it means she wants me to hold her right away.

한번은 밀웜 사육 통에 구멍이 났는데, 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 하필 정전까지 나는 바람에 완전히 수습하지 못했다. 그 사이 밀웜들이 대거 탈출해서 작업실 바닥을 자유롭게 기어다녔고, 나나와 체리가 그중 절반 가까이를 먹어치웠다.

Once, a hole appeared in the mealworm breeding container, and to make matters worse, there was a power outage, so I couldn't fully clean up the mess. In the meantime, mealworms escaped in droves and crawled freely across the studio floor. Nana and Cherry devoured nearly half of them.
It was like experiencing an all-you-can-eat mealworm buffet.

체리와 나나가 알을 낳을 때 벽에 기대어 둔 TV 뒤 좁은 틈새로 들어가는 것을 좋아해서, 틈 안쪽에 푹신한 밀짚 방석을 깔아주었다.

발로 땅을 적당히 파낸 뒤 몸을 흙에 비비며 진드기나 먼지 같은 것을 털어내는데, 한번 자리 잡으면 갈 생각을 하지 않는다. 역시 목욕탕은 노천탕이지, 야외 흙 목욕이 최고야.

내 생일
모든 약속을 미루고 닭들과 보냈다. 닭들을 돌봐야 해서 어디도 가지 못한다. 아니, 사실 얘네랑 노는 게 더 재밌다.
시장에서 한우 꽃등심을 한 덩어리 사서 셀프 생일상을 차리고, 기름기 없는 부분 일부를 잘라 나나, 체리, 잭슨 밥그릇에도 올려주었는데 처음엔 콕콕 찔러보기만 해서 관심 없는 줄 알았다. 하지만 한번 맛보더니 좋아했다.
너희도 나랑 입맛이 비슷하구나.

My birthday
I postponed all my plans and spent the day with the chickens. I can't go anywhere because I have to take care of them. Actually, it's more fun hanging out with them anyway.
I bought a chunk of Korean beef sirloin at the market and prepared my own birthday meal. I cut off some of the lean parts and put them in Nana, Cherry, and Jackson's bowls. At first, they just poked at it, so I thought they weren't interested. But once they tasted it, they loved it.
You have similar tastes to mine.

체리, 나나, 잭슨은 첫 산책 이후 매일 산책을 나섰다. 이날도 어김없이 작업실에서 나갈 준비를 하던 중, 내 등 뒤에서 갑자기 푸드덕-꺅 꽉꽉 하고 비명 소리가 났다. 돌아보니 나나가 왜 그랬는지 허둥대며 체리한테 돌진하고 있었고, 덩달아 놀란 체리가 피하려다 바닥에 놓여 있던 끈 뭉치에 발이 걸리며 급기야 둘이 충돌하고 말았다. 흥분이 가라앉으면 괜찮아질 거라 생각했는데, 체리가 끙끙대며 다리를 절었고 몇 분이 지나도록 일어서지 못했다. 나나는 놀라서 숨을 거칠게 몰아쉬고 있었지만 일어서 있는 걸 보니 다행히 다리에는 문제가 없는 것 같았다. 퍼덕이는 체리를 간신히 들어 다리를 만져봤는데, 한쪽 다리 힘이 완전히 풀려 덜렁거리는 게 아닌가. 나는 사태의 심각성을 깨닫고 급히 동물병원을 찾기 시작했다. 주변에 일반 동물병원은 많은데 닭을 진료하는 특수 동물병원은 찾기가 쉽지 않았다. 겨우 찾아낸 병원은 토요일이라 30분 뒤에 영업을 종료한다고 했다.
그래도 영업 중이라 천만다행이었다. 작업실에서 차로 15분 거리라 마음이 다급해진 나는 서둘러 택시를 부르고 케이지나 가방을 챙길 새도 없이 무작정 체리를 안고 택시에 올랐다. 택시 기사님은 손님이 난데없이 거대한 닭을 데리고 타자 적잖이 당황한 기색이었지만, 감사하게도 문제 삼지 않고 출발하셨다. 평소 체리가 안겨 있는 걸 답답해해서 안으면 금방 발버둥 쳤기 때문에 잔뜩 긴장하고 있었는데, 택시 기사님께서 닭이 보기보다 참 순하다고 하실 정도로 차분히 있어주어서 쫓겨나지 않고 무사히 도착지까지 갈 수 있었다.
July 22nd
Cherry, Nana, and Jackson had gone on walks every day since their first outing. This day was no different—I was preparing to leave the studio when suddenly I heard flapping and shrill squawking behind me. I turned to see Nana frantically charging at Cherry for some reason, and Cherry, startled, tried to dodge but got her foot caught in a bundle of cords on the floor. The two collided. I thought they'd be fine once they calmed down, but Cherry groaned and limped, unable to stand even after several minutes. Nana was breathing heavily from the shock, but she was standing, so thankfully her legs seemed okay. I managed to pick up the fluttering Cherry and felt her leg—one leg had completely lost its strength and dangled limply. I realized the seriousness of the situation and urgently began searching for a vet. There were many regular vet clinics nearby, but finding a specialty clinic that treats chickens wasn't easy. The clinic I finally found said they were closing in 30 minutes because it was Saturday.
Still, I was incredibly relieved they were open. The studio was a 15-minute drive away, so in my panic I hurriedly called a taxi and got in holding Cherry without even grabbing a carrier or bag. The taxi driver looked quite taken aback when a passenger suddenly boarded with a giant chicken, but thankfully didn't make an issue of it and drove off. I was braced for trouble because Cherry normally hated being held and would struggle right away, but she stayed so calm that the driver even remarked how gentle the chicken was. Thanks to that, I wasn't kicked out and made it safely to our destination.
병원 문 닫기 10분 전에 도착해서 간신히 진료 접수를 할 수 있게 되었는데, 데스크에서 간호사가 반려 닭 이름이 뭐냐고 물으셨다. 그냥 체리라고 답하면 될 것을 이상하게 '반려'라는 단어에 제동이 걸리고 말았다. '반려' 닭이 아닌데 이 질문에 답하는 순간 '반려'라고 확정되어 버릴 것 같은, 사실 왜곡에 대한 불편함과 양심의 가책을 느껴 체리라고 입이 떨어지지 않았다. 대신 "음... 닭이요."라고 얼버무렸더니 '이름: 닭'으로 등록되어 버렸다.
체리의 X-ray 결과는 골절이었다. 그것도 두 군데나 완전히 부러진. 설마 했는데 너무 놀랐다. 고작 부딪힌 것 가지고 골절이라니! 수의사 선생님께서 케이지에 오래 갇혀 생활한 육계는 갑작스럽게 무리해서 산책하거나 운동하면 뼈에 문제가 생길 수도 있다는 예상치 못한 설명을 해주셨다. X-ray 사진을 보시며 조류는 워낙 마취가 잘 안 되는 데다 체리의 뼈가 너무 약해서 핀을 심는 수술을 해도 재활 예후가 좋지 않다고, 또 깁스를 할 수도 없는 부위라고 절망스러운 말씀을 이어가셨다. 그저 진통제를 먹으며 운 좋게 뼈가 자연적으로 붙기를 기도하는 수밖에 없단다.
기운이 쭉 빠진다. 치킨 뼈가 생각난다. 발라 먹을 때 똑똑 잘 부러지던.
I arrived 10 minutes before the clinic closed and barely managed to check in. At the desk, the nurse asked what my companion chicken's name was. I should have just said Cherry, but strangely, I stumbled over the word "companion." She wasn't a "companion" chicken, and I felt that answering this question would somehow confirm her as one—a distortion of the truth that made me uncomfortable and guilty. I couldn't bring myself to say Cherry. Instead, I mumbled, "Um... it's a chicken," and she ended up registered as "Name: Chicken."
Cherry's X-ray results showed fractures. Two complete breaks. I'd hoped it wouldn't be that bad, but I was shocked. A fracture just from bumping into something! The vet gave an unexpected explanation: broiler chickens that have lived confined in cages for a long time can develop bone problems if they suddenly overexert themselves with walks or exercise. Looking at the X-ray, the vet continued with devastating news—birds are notoriously difficult to anesthetize, and Cherry's bones were so weak that even with pin surgery, the rehabilitation prognosis wouldn't be good. Plus, it was an area that couldn't be cast. All we could do was give her painkillers and pray that, with luck, the bones would heal naturally.
I felt completely deflated. I thought of chicken bones. How easily they snapped when eating them.

작업실에 도착하자마자 새로운 미션이 주어졌다. 활동성이 높은 체리는 아픈 와중에도 미친 닭처럼 푸드덕대며 돌아다니려 했고, 몸이 마음대로 움직이지 않으니 당황해서 넘어졌다 굴렀다 난리가 났다. 그대로 두었다간 걷잡을 수 없이 악화될 게 뻔했다. 위험하게 움직이는 체리를 가방 안에 잠시 묶어두고 안전한 회복 장치 구상에 돌입했다.
1. 체리의 무거운 몸에 다리가 눌리지 않도록 몸을 공중에 띄울 것.
2. 몸을 떠받치되 발바닥은 바닥에 닿도록 해 안정감을 줄 것.
3. 몸을 지탱하는 판이 무르면 몸을 가누기 어려우니 수월하게 짚고 뒤척일 수 있도록 단단한 재료를 사용할 것.
4. 부러진 다리를 수직으로 펼 수 있도록 몸 지지대에 다리 삽입 구멍을 만들어 뼈 정렬을 맞출 것.
5. 체리가 편암함을 느끼도록 신체 굴곡을 고려할 것.
6. 안 아픈 다리로 운동을 할 수 있도록 할 것.
7. 체리에게 또 다른 문제가 일어나기 전, 30분 안에 작업실에 있는 재료를 활용해 빠르게 만들 것.
작업실 구석에 세워 둔 촬영 장비 C-stand가 먼저 눈에 들어왔다. 높낮이도 조절되고 체리 무게를 버틸 만한 구조물로 적합했다. 수평으로 매달 수 있는 봉도 있어서 그네 구조를 만들어 체리를 매달아 올릴 수도 있을 것 같았다. 그네의 좌판, 체리 몸은 뭘로 받치지... 아! 플라스틱 펜스! 갈빗대처럼 생겨서 중앙의 대 몇 개만 절단하면 그 사이로 다리도 넣을 수 있고 쟁반처럼 상체를 안정감 있게 지탱할 수 있을 것이다. 마침 유닛당 크기가 딱 체리 몸 크기다. 열성형도 가능한 소재네!
As soon as I arrived at the studio, a new mission presented itself. Cherry, naturally active, kept trying to flutter around like a crazed chicken despite her injury. Unable to control her body, she panicked, falling and rolling in chaos. If I left her like this, things would clearly spiral out of control. I temporarily confined the dangerously mobile Cherry in a bag and began devising a safe recovery apparatus.
1. Suspend her body in the air so her legs aren't crushed by her heavy weight.
2. Support her body while keeping her feet touching the ground for stability.
3. Use sturdy materials so she can easily lean and shift—a soft support would make it hard for her to balance.
4. Create holes in the body support for her legs to fit through vertically, allowing proper bone alignment.
5. Consider her body contours to ensure comfort.
6. Allow her to exercise with her uninjured leg.
7. Quickly build it within 30 minutes using materials available in the studio, before another problem arises.
My eyes landed on a C-stand filming equipment standing in the corner of the studio. Height-adjustable and structurally sound enough to support Cherry's weight—perfect. It even had a horizontal arm for suspending things, so I could create a swing structure to lift Cherry up. For the swing seat, what could support Cherry's body... Ah! The plastic fence! It's rib-shaped, so if I cut out a few central bars, I could slip her legs through while the rest would stably support her upper body like a tray. The unit size is exactly Cherry's body size, too. And it's a heat-formable material!
판단이 끝나고 빠르게 펜스 유닛을 한 개 분리해 그라인더로 다리 넣을 부분 두 곳을 커팅하고, 열풍기로 날카로운 부분을 녹여 없애면서 체리 골격에 맞춰 중심축을 휘어 완성했다. 펜스 유닛과 C-stand를 연결할 끈을 찾다가 산책용 줄 길이를 대보니 딱 맞다! 산책용이라 견고하게 무게를 잘 버텨줄 것이다. 모자란 끈은 노끈 사용. 마지막으로 푹신하게 수건을 깔고 체리를 그네형 병상에 태워봤다.
와! 성공이다.

Decision made, I quickly detached one fence unit, cut out two sections for her legs with a grinder, melted the sharp edges with a heat gun, and bent the central axis to fit Cherry's skeleton. Looking for cord to connect the fence unit to the C-stand, I tried the walking leash—perfect length! Being a walking leash, it would sturdily hold the weight. For the remaining cord, I used twine. Finally, I laid down a soft towel and placed Cherry onto the swing-style recovery bed.
Wow! Success.
